Vancouver’s first independent micro-distillery of local, handcrafted, small-batch spirits – Long Table Distillery – is opening its tasting room and sales centre to the public early December 2012 – just in time for holiday celebrations. “It may be small, but Long Table Distillery is Vancouver’s first local distillery since the 50’s,” says Charles Tremewen, Founder & Distiller and a self proclaimed foodie. “The stunning copper pot still will be the heart of our business creating a unique collection of contemporary, West Coast inspired spirits such as gin, vodka and other apothecary style distilled beverages. We are using our hand-crafted recipes with a focus on local, natural and organic ingredients found here on the coast, such as hand picked wild juniper berries, wild ginger, fennel, spruce tips and a host of other botanicals.” Long Table Distillery also sources it’s water locally, from British Columbia’s pristine Coast Mountain Range. For those botanicals not available locally, they will be acquiring them from fairly traded sources from around the world. As Founder and distiller, Charles Tremewen, received his training in Artisan Distilling at Michigan State University. Charles has a long time connection with Vancouver’s natural and organic food and beverage industry as Product & Brand Manager for Nature’s Path Organic Foods and Director of Marketing for Salt Spring Coffee. His work within the sustainability community has helped shape his business in this direction. Long Table Distillery Ltd. Is located at 1451 Hornby Street, on the North slopes of False Creek – Just one block from the Granville Island ferry terminal (at the south terminus of Hornby Street), close to bus and bike routes and within a comfortable walking distance from the West End and Yaletown. They have lots bicycle parking out front.

November 21, 2012 — The Highland Companies announced today that it is withdrawing its application to develop a Mega-Quarry in Melancthon Township. Highland also intends to discontinue its efforts to restore the rail corridor through Dufferin County. In addition, Highland announced that John Lowndes has resigned from his role as President and has no further involvement with the company.

“While we believe that the quarry would have brought significant economic benefit to Melancthon Township and served Ontario’s well-documented need for aggregate, we acknowledge that the application does not have sufficient support from the community and government to justify proceeding with the approval process,” said John Scherer of The Highland Companies.

Highland will continue to focus on its farms and on supplying its customers with high quality potatoes and other crops. The company is proud of the improvements it has made through modernizing equipment and storage facilities as well as enhancing food and worker safety.
