The GMO-Free ZONE is an initiative of the Canadian Chefs’ Congress that encourages restaurants and food establishments to declare their opposition to Genetically Engineered (GE) foods. In 2008 Jeffrey Smith, the leading world expert in the health issues surrounding genetically modified foods, gave the keynote address at the Ontario Congress. In 2010 at the BC Congress more than 200 chefs signed a petition against GE salmon in Canada. The GMO Free ZONE – Food Professionals Against Genetically Modified Organisms group on Facebook has 1,400 members and counting.
